|
| The idea of this site was born
at a retreat held by the board of directors of the
National Congress of Italian Canadians – Toronto
District (NCIC-TD) in April 1999. At that retreat,
the directors reviewed the original objectives set by the
National Congress of Italian Canadians when it was
established in Ottawa in 1974. While it was agreed
those objectives remained relevant a quarter of a century
later, the priority of certain objectives was noted in
light of present-day realities. In the end, it was decided
that the best way to achieve those objectives at the turn
of the millennium was to create a web presence for the
NCIC-TD. It was also agreed that such site should serve
not just the Italian Canadian community of Toronto, but
indeed Italian Canadians across all of Canada. Thanks to a
grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation our goal of
creating this site---in the service of the Congress’
national objectives---has now been realized.
This website builds on the
popular success of a publication of the Congress’
Ontario Region ten years ago, under the leadership of
former president Manlio d’Ambrosio---the Directory of
Italian Canadian Resources in Ontario (DICRO). This site,
in turn, includes:
|
|
| A Directory of Community
Organizations - An
updated and expanded version of DICRO, including
non-profit, charitable, and unincorporated,
community-based organizations from across all of Canada
|
|
| News Updates -
Information not normally collected in one location will be
an original feature of this site. In their
newspapers, bulletins, and newsletters Italian Canadian
communities across Canada provide information on upcoming
local events and notices of interest to the local
community. Electronic technology (e-mail) will now
allow us to collect such information--from coast to coast
to coast---in one location, publish it at this site, and,
in turn, disseminate it to anyone with Internet access.
|
|
| Meeting Place – We
have created an online version of that most Italian of
community institutions, the piazza. Our chatroom, a
virtual piazza, will allow members of the community to
meet and exchange views and opinions on any topic at any
time.
|
|
| Mission Statement |
| And so, the mission of this
site is clear:
to provide---to anyone
interested in the Italian Canadian community---information
about its hundreds of organizations and their activities;
to serve---by way of links to
other Italian Canadian websites---as the principal portal
into the online Italian Canadian community; and
to promote and develop a
greater consciousness of ourselves as a community by
providing a place where we can act as a community
acts---engaged in the free and fair exchange of view about
ourselves, the world around us, and our place in it.
